Rumkicks 反骨 (Born Rude) First full album on CD
Rumkicks 反骨 First full album on CD Self released 13 track including 2023 versions of ‘Punk Rocker’ & ‘Goodbye Song’. This copy actually belongs to my niece Lee Ji-yun who lives in Jayang-dong and is a first year middle school student. Her favorite song by this band is their cover version of Turning Point.
(Part of this description is from a Reddit post under my ID: Hanahoe-double-agent) Seoul, Korean punk band trio which has had different line-ups over the years. The enduring member has been the charismatic current lead singer-guitarist and primary songwriter Jeong Yea-won, who is/was also in the band Rux. Current bass player is Yoo Yeon-ju and long time-returning drummer is Cho Min-jeong. Former member Choi See-un played bass and vocals on previous releases.
There’s been some discussion about their visual image, but it’s important to note that this image, which draws upon the early 80s British punk scene, is something quite new in a Korean context. While Rux and other bands pioneered it, Rumkicks projected it further. Unlike in Japan, the optics and the music itself emerged relatively recently in South Korea. All the classic early British punk albums and many of the U.S. ones were released in Japan not long after their home releases, so Japan latched onto this music right at the time. But South Korea was under a military dictatorship right up until at least the very late 80s, and anything punk was deemed as subversive and was strongly censored. (The only albums that found their way out were pirate pressings of NMTB and a couple of later Clash albums.) So within Korea itself this band’s style, music and dress wise, is something quite new to the vast majority of Koreans.
What I really like about Rumkicks is their songs are good. Punk Rocker and Goodbye Song are really well written tracks … the melodies work and they’re cohesive. My dad’s from South-East London and I also like the way that a lot of these recent Korean punk bands, Rux included, draw influences from the early UK punk sound and have a similar vibe.

NOTE FROM WEB PAGE AUTHOR
August 2018: Please note that I will take a bit of a break from updating this site for a while – at least until my next break period at the end of this year.
The reason is mostly to do with time constraints this year, but also that this site mostly deals with international vinyl pressings of Korean artists/music, and I have already found most of the discs that are out there. It’s getting harder to find new items in this area.
In future I may try to provide information on the new vinyl which is being pressed in Korea at the moment. Will think it through at the end of the year, when I start to update the site again.
Meanwhile, three non-Korean vinyl pressings of Korean music I haven’t been able to find a copy of are pictured below. These are three records I am still trying to find:
HAPPY DOLLS Show Album No.1 VINYL LP (Canada) Solar SAR 2012 (1977) (The prices have gone up really high for this album so I might wait until I am lucky to pick up one for a modest price.)
KIM SISTERS Their first album TAIWANESE RED VINYL
キムチ シスタ-ズ KIMCHI KATS 京城の夜 / アリラン 7 INCH VINYL 45 (Japan) Victor VS 558 (1961 – Airiang on B side, I think the group traveled to UK at one stage.)
There are a couple of European Kim Sisters records I am looking for also.
If interested … I also have a web page with info on Japanese pressings in my collection (punk/hip hop/jazz/funk/etc.).
Click here or on the picture for link to the Japanese pressings page:

KIM SISTERS The Fabulous Kim Sisters Sing AUSTRALIA EP 1967
KIM SISTERS The Fabulous Kim Sisters Sing 7 INCH VINYL EP (Australia) Monument PXE-11,463 (1967 – incredibly rare release. Unfortunately, the copy of this EP that I finally found did not have a picture copy. Thus I have included pics of the labels only, however below are some pictures of a copy which sold on E-bay not long ago. This is very rare, and I wasn’t sure it actually existed until recently. Note: the E following PX indicates that this is a special Australian EXPORT pressing to be shipped for distribution to South East Asia.
Mic’s collection status: I now have a copy of the EP but my copy does not have a picture cover. It is in nice condition though.

ARIRANG ELLY WILLIAMS US VINYL 1954
ELLY WILLIAMS Worry, Worry, Worry / Arirang (Ah-Dee-Dong) (US) Rainbow 45-253 RED VINYL (1954 – this single is of particular interest because it’s one of the first releases of Arirang on vinyl record (not shellac SP 78) anywhere. It may well be the first because I the song isn’t on the earlier Folkways LP. Rare.)
Mic’s collection status: I have a copy of this 45.
